So you think you know the Vixens? We’re athletes, sure. Skating, hitting, winning and all that. But there’s a lot more to this league than just the women on skates.
It takes a tremendous effort from countless volunteers and support staff to do everything we do — from referees and NSOs, to trainers and coaches, to accountants and marketing professionals. The hours and effort people put in to help make this league a success is truly amazing.
That’s why it’s EXTRA special, and we’re EXTRA proud to announce, that graphic artist extraordinaire Steve Jencks has won GOLD at the Mid-Michigan ADDY Awards for the bout poster he designed for our June 23 bout last season. The poster was also honored with a Judge’s Choice award at the annual Mid-Michigan ADDY ceremony on Feb. 21.
The Addy Awards are the advertising and marketing industry’s largest and most recognized competition. Winning gold at the Mid-Michigan event puts Steve’s design in the running for the district competition, where winners from 14 areas across the country will then move on to the national awards contest.
The Addy-winning artwork is a salute to Veterans of our Armed Forces, and features an homage to the wartime advertising posters of the 1940s — with, of course, a modern roller derby spin.
You can check out more of Steve’s work at Lost Highway’s B-Movie Reviews and Cult Films.
By the way — it just so happens that Steve is also the creator of the Lansing Derby Vixens official logo, the man behind many more bout posters and other visual arts efforts, a B-movie and Cult Film aficionado, and probably coolest of all, he’s married to our own Evil Irene, #999 on the Capital Corruption!
Congrats and thanks, Steve!
